Handle a hard disk drive as you would an egg. The internal mechanisms of a hard drive are much more fragile than most people realize. If you have to set the hard drive down, do so very gently. Ideally, use the original packaging materials for your drive if you still have them. If not, they are relatively easy to replicate:

1. Wrap the media in an anti-static bag to prevent damage from electrostatic discharge.
2. If possible, use a box that is at least twice the size of the media so that the media can be suspended in the middle of the box. We recommend a minimum of two inches of insulation all around for an average 2lb drive.
3. Pack the box securely with foam, bubble wrap or newspaper so the media will not move from the middle of the box.
4. If you are sending a computer or a laptop, use great care to ensure proper cushioning and protection. We recommend including several of packing materials around the media. The heavier the unit, the more insulation is required.

For shipping from within the United States, prefer Fed-Ex or UPS and for international shipping, we prefer DHL.

• A brief description of the equipment including model number and serial number for each.
• A description of the symptoms you are experiencing.
• Any information you can give us on the files that you need recovered.
• Any necessary passwords we might need to access your files.
